It Starts So Slowly You Barely Notice
First it's one trip a night. Then two. Then you find yourself standing at the toilet longer than you used to, waiting for a stream that starts, stops, and starts again. You finish, walk back to bed, and ten minutes later your bladder tells you it wasn't quite done.
Doctors have a name for the night-time waking: nocturia. But most men never bring it up. It feels like a small thing, and it feels private. So it goes unmentioned at the dinner table, unmentioned on the golf course, and often unmentioned at the annual check-up.
Here is what is worth knowing: it is extremely common from the mid-forties onward. It is not a personal failing, not a lack of discipline, and not something you caused. What it is, is a signal — and most men misread that signal as nothing more than the calendar.
